Diamond Head magnificently stands on the eastern side of the Waikiki coastline on the island of Oahu. This famous State Monument is an extinct volcanic crater formed about 300,000 years ago.
Hiking Diamond Head
Hiking Diamond Head leads you to panoramic views of the island. This was a favorite hike of mine when I was in college, and I still love to hike up the crater on my return visits to the island.
Diamond Head Trail
From the start of the trail head, the hike is about .8 of a mile to the top viewpoint. The terrain is diverse as you climb switchback trails, walk through dimly lit tunnels and ascend steep and narrow staircases. You’ll be challenged to one staircase with 99 steps to climb! Near the top, you’ll see bunkers from World War II. The trail was built as a military defense location in 1908.
What to Expect
The hike is relatively short, yet with the steep climb and humid heat, it can be challenging. You’ll see morning exercise enthusiasts jogging quickly up the trail and non-athletic walkers slowing ascending the trail and resting often. I suggest you enjoy the views and hike at a comfortable pace. The stunning views on top along with the accomplishment of the climb is very rewarding.
Tips
- Take a water bottle.
- Hike early in the morning when it’s less crowded and cooler.
- Look for whales in the ocean.
- Take your camera.
Location and Times
- Trail is open daily from 6am to 6pm.
- Trail head location is between Makapu’u Avenue and 18th Avenue off of Diamond Head Road.

Oh, I remember our college hikes! What a blast. Every trip I take back to Honolulu, I always hike Diamond Head. It’s nostalgic, a great workout, and the views still knock me off me feet. It would be great if we could plan a reunion.
Aloha Tam Tam! A reunion would be a blast. I wonder if we could ever pull it off. Mahalo for commenting on my site – you’re so sweet. ~Kari
