Zion National Park in southwestern Utah is part of the Grand Staircase with magnificent layers of red rock towers, deep slot canyons, springs and waterfalls and awe-inspiring cliffs and mesas. A friend and I started our weekend adventure from the south entrance of the Zion Canyon adjacent to the charming town of Springdale. On our vacation, we camped, explored the popular viewpoints and conquered one steep hike full of stunning scenery.
Weeping Rock at Zion
The Weeping Rock, a very popular viewing destination, is where water literally weeps from the rocks. Amazingly, the water seeps through the rocks for approximately 1000 years before you can see it weeping out of the rocks. Hmmm, I thought it would only take days – so much for my incorrect theory. At this viewpoint, the springs and red rocks contrast beautifully with lush foliage.
This is a short but steep one mile round trip hike. We faced an unexpected surprise as a huge rattlesnake crossed in front of our path.
Zion’s Observation Point Hike
The Observation Point hike leads you through the spectacular Echo Canyon.

You’ll experience an elevation gain of over 2,100 feet as you climb toward the Observation Point with panoramic views of the Zion Canyon. The hike is considered a strenuous 8 mile round trip climb.
I hiked during the hottest time in the summer and felt the sweltering 100 degree heat, yet I found the trail, views and climb exhilarating. The hike starts at the Weeping Rock trailhead.
Camping in Zion National Park
We stayed at a campground near the south entrance of the park with a site next to the Virgin River. With the intense summer heat, I found that dipping in the river was a perfect way to cool off! Water ballet, bubbles and lots of chuckles!

Check out the deer I spotted in the campground!
Touring Zions National Park

Many of the park roads are closed to motorists. A shuttle takes tourists to the popular sites and trailhead locations. I felt the lack of traffic and congestion enhanced the natural beauty and serene peacefulness of this great National Park.

Observation Point is a killer hike! It was tough with the heat and climb. I suggest the hike for those who are athletic and want to see amazing views without the crowds.
Hi Katie – Thanks for viewing my website. I agree with your insight. The hike was definitely challenging in the heat, but very rewarding.
